About Us

Carelon Behavioral Health Maryland works in partnership with the Maryland Public Behavioral Health System (PBHS) to oversee the state’s Medicaid behavioral health program. This program offers a range of mental health services, including inpatient and outpatient care, residential treatment for children and adolescents, and partial hospitalization. Carelon administers the Maryland PBHS in accordance with regulations set by the Maryland Department of Health (MDH). We manage specialty behavioral health services funded by Medicaid and state resources to support individuals in need of care and assistance. In addition, Carelon authorizes services, evaluates medical necessity, and aims to reduce unnecessary hospitalizations by ensuring that individuals receive the appropriate level of care at the right time.

Special assistance is available for:

Low vision or blind participants: Large-print or Braille membership booklets. Call Carelon at 1-800-888-1965.

Hard of hearing participants and those with cognitive, mobility or speech difficulty: Call MD Relay at 711.

Non-English speakers: Translation services are available. Members who speak English as a second language can call Carelon for free at 1-800-888-1965 for personal assistance or to request translated materials.
